Wolf Lord: That's me. You can challenge Connahei for his position if you like, but I don't imagine he'd let it go very easily, and the Legends wouldn't be too pleased about following someone unfamiliar. Try it if you like, but remember that ICA = ICC*.
Legend: These are the members of Connahei's pack. They outrank all Alpha Leaders and are not the sort of wolf you want to cross. You can only become one if Connahei asks you to join his pack.
Alpha Leader: Like the client kings of ancient Rome, these are alphas of their own packs in charge of their own territory, but still answer to Connahei. To become an alpha, you can attempt to claim an unclaimed territory, or challenge the alpha of a claimed territory for his or her position. Keep in mind, the pack you take over might just kill you if they don't like you. It's best to start in a pack and work your way up, make yourself friendly with and familiar to your packmates, and then try for the leadership. At least then the leader is likely to just demote you if you lose, rather than kill you.
Beta Commander: The right-hand-man of the alpha, these wolves gain their rank mainly by proving themselves worthy and being appointed to the position by the alpha. This isn't to say that they can't be challenged for their positions, though, and attaining this rank by winning a duel with an existing Beta isn't unheard of.
Delta Warrior: There can be any number of these in a pack. A Delta is a Warrior who has earned superiority over the other Warriors in the pack by some means, or his proved him or herself especially skilled or valuable.
Warrior: Regular pack members can earn respect by taking on other wolves and proving themselves capable. When a wolf has won two or three spars and suffered few major losses, then they are considered a warrior.
Hunter: Every wolf has to eat, and so every wolf has to hunt. A hunter is nobody special, just the average packmember who hasn't really made anything of him or herself.
Omega: You don't want to be this. Usually there's only one in the pack, and he or she is the last to eat and the first to get picked on. Although bullied and often undernourished, omegas are valuable for releasing pack tension by acting as an emotional punching-bag, or even a clown to encourage puppy-like play. Most packs wouldn't function without an omega- but that doesn't make being one any more pleasant. A wolf usually becomes omega just by being naturally submissive, by losing an important fight, or by earning the pack's severe dislike for something.

Claiming a territory is a big step OOCly. Right now it makes you responsible for building a pack, keeping them active, stimulating roleplay, and even contributing to board descriptions. If you're not a strong roleplayer, I would not suggest trying out with an alpha character right away.
If you feel you're ready for all that (as well as the IC-burden, of course. It's up to you to deal with border intrusions, attacks, discipline, and stuck-up Legends who might wander into your territory demanding tribute) then you can claim an unclaimed territory by making a post in the territory you would like. Currently both the East and North areas have been claimed, but challenges can still be made to the wolves who claimed them.. The West area will be opened up later if there's enough activity to warrant a third pack being started.
Once you've posted with your wolf's claim, I will reply. A Legend (and possibly even Connahei himself) will show up and ask some questions. If I don't feel like you're ready to take on the responsibility, I'll let you know both OOCly and ICly. If you seem like a good candidate, your character will be asked to swear fealty to the Wolflord, and then be made an alpha.
If you want to try to take over another pack's land, discuss it with their alphas in the plot-planning board and make sure they're okay with it. If you get the go-ahead, start roleplaying out IC planning and preparation for the attack. You wouldn't just say, "Hey, wanna go try and take over a territory?" randomly one morning. And preparation for war can be great for creating IC-tension, too.
And if you've got questions, just ask!
