The Distant Past
Many seasons ago, this area of land was not known as the Wolflord's Lands. In fact, where this story begins, the Wolflord himself was not known as anything other than young upstart Connahei, son of the Beta Commander Juyii who didn't know his place. Yes, he was no son-of-alpha, our Wolflord, but a cub born of a pairing that required permission from a superior. Had the elk not been plentiful that spring, he wouldn't have been permitted to come into existence at all.
But he did, and he saw how his father and mother were superior to the other members of the pack, but still remembered to keep their tails lower than the alphas'. Connahei was sharply aware, as a youth, of the insult of his position. He could not eat until everyone else ate, he had to bow down and whimper. It didn't sit happily with him at all, and he longed for dominance- longed for an opportunity to prove himself a better leader than the cowering, greedy oaf that led them in his time. He challenged the alpha, the brother of Juyii and thus his uncle, for his position. Naturally in his youth and inexperience, he was sorely whipped time and time again. Karkara, Alpha Leader of the Karkarions, declared him the pack Omega. But Connahei would not have that, and he left.
When at last he arrived at the place we now know of as the Wastes, the westernmost area of the Wolflord's Lands, the young, ambitious boy had grown much in wisdom. Seasons spent alone and weeks spent starving taught him the hard way the value of a pack. No alpha could survive long without inferiors, packmates, to hunt game with. He could track down the fattest calf and think of the most cunning plan, but without followers it would do him no good and deliver to him no meat. He joined the first pack he encountered, a medium-sized and relaxed group calling themselves Elm-Tree Wolves. He worked his way up the ranks with tooth, brought himself back to full health, and then fought and defeated the alpha, Left-Foot, who submit and became omega as is the natural course. An intelligent fellow, however, he quickly earned a place at Connahei's side as Beta Commander. Respect for his defeated foe replaced contempt for someone who had once subjugated him, however kindly.
Connahei renamed the Elm-Tree Wolves to the Juyii, in honour of his father, who he had cut all ties with when he left his birthpack. With his energy and determination and Left-Foot's knowledge and experience, the Juyii thrived. The Wolflord was just beginning to feel satisfid, at last, with his lot in life, when another pack challenged them for their territory. The Juyii left the bloody battlegrounds the victors, but at Left-Foot's compassionate urging, Connahei let the surviving invaders return home at no penalty but the lives lost in the spars that had broken out over the course of the attack.
All seemed well until without warning, a fire ravaged the western forests, which were dry and brittle after a number of hot, rainless days. Left-Foot and Connahei's two infant daughters were killed, and Connahei took it as a sign of disapproval from the greater powers that must be watching his story unfold. He was being punished for his weakness, for allowing the opportunity to seize more lands and more power to slip by because of a sentimental old fool's ramblings. Fate wanted him to continue growing in strength, and when he refused her offering, took from him in her wrath his lands, his children, and the mortal who had enticed him into the path of forgiveness and softness.
Taking all of the Juyii out of the western territory, after the fires a desolate ashland for miles and miles, Connahei journeyed to the south. There he saw his destiny unfold, for the land was lush and good, and the freshwater lakes drew plentiful prey. The territory belonged to another pack, but when the Juyii moved in, with their reputation for fierce warrior-like loyalty to the motives of their strong-willed alpha, the pack moved out without protest. And so the Southern Lakelands were claimed in the name of the Juyii. But that wasn't enough for Connahei, who could see that to be Alpha of a single pack simply couldn't satisfy what he knew had to be a grand destiny- his destiny. He was meant, believed Connahei, for more.
And so he took his pack to war. He fought the tough, wild folk of the mountain range packs, the sly and quick plains packs, and whoever remained in the ashlands that had once been his territory. Anyone who would not submit to him as the Wolflord and grant his pack access to their territory and their prey at any time were fought until they conceded, or, in extreme cases, until they were all dead or run away. Many died. The Juyii became tattered and jaded, and a large number deserted this new, power-hungry Connahei. Since Left-Step's death, he'd slowly but steadily become a monster.
Those that died in battle were weak, he said, and those that fled were traitors. Soon his pack was made up only of the toughest and most loyal of his followers, many of which were wolves from opposing packs who defected, identifying Connahei as the stronger force, and so the superior leader. With the packs chased off, wiped out, or subjugated, Connahei declared himself The Wolf Lord, and renamed his followers, the war-like and often brutish crew that was left of them, The Wolf Lord's Legendary Warriors, or Legends for short.
The Recent Past
The Wolf Lord had opened his vast expanses of land to ambitious young wolves who dreamed of starting a pack. Some were loners, some survivors of his genocide, others Legends who left the Lakelands, wanting to start up something of their own. They were encouraged to stake claims over territory, but were to submit to the Wolf Lord's laws and recognize him as their ultimate master if they wished to keep those lands and their lives.
Word got out of the Wolflord's offer, and quickly the Eastern grasslands were claimed by Nalvarrak, a young upcoming wolf from outside lands. With the approval of the Wolflord, he was allowed the land and began the process of building his pack. Opportunities were still ripe for those who wanted to challenge him and take the land for themselves, but no wolves showed themselves to dispute his claim.
In the North, a young male came across the unoccupied land of the mountains and laid his own claim on it- unaware, however, of the history of the land and oblivious to the Wolflord or his Legends. When asked whether he would answer to Connahei, this wolf, Theric, replied he answered to no-one, and would challenge any who tried to change that. The two Legends who confronted him headed back to the southern lakelands to report back to Connahei. He began preparations, planning to take a number of Legends and either chase off or kill the wolf who would dare defy him. Until then, the mountains were as good as claimed by Theric- but only for a little while. After he'd been taken care of, it would be anybody's guess who would take over control of the coldest, rockiest region of the Wolflord's Lands.
Now that the bloodshed of Connahei's long-lasting war had ended, wolves began returning to the lands that were once rife with pain and fear. Although there was peace, it was peace under the Wolflord's Rule. With the calm starting to settle once more over these territories, old faces and new faces began to come out of the woodwork. Among these were deserters of the Juyii and survivors of Connahei's destructive campaign now grown- both of which could pose a threat to the very recently established mastery of the Wolflord.
Unaware of them, Connahei was set to mount his attack on the North, gathering his Legends around him once more. He started the journey from the Lakelands to the mountains, and having consulted his pack's seer, Athena, was certain that the single wolf who styled himself Alpha would be no threat to him, and easily dominated. In the mean time, Nalvarrak gathered to him two wolves, both previously rogues, and although they were not entirely pack-minded, they would do for the moment to help him defend his borders and keep his position.
Nalvarrak's pack was quick to grow, and attracted two more wolves- a pair of old Legends, one of which was part of the original Juyii, who were thought dead by Connahei. They managed to evade his notice and went by aliases within Nalvarrak's wolves. Tse and Dirmad, as they were really named, chose to settle in a risky place, rather near to the Wolflord's base of operations- and was risky, because if he had encountered them, they could have easily been branded as deserters and punished as such.
They missed detection, luckily, when Connahei passed through with his Delta Warrior, Ignius, and seven other Legends, on the move towards the mountains. Following the Salmon River, which goes north to south, he was only a few days away from his goal- the upstart Theric who would be put in his place.
And that was how things came to be how they are now.

Current Day
This is a busy, unstable time of reclaiming lands and rebuilding packs, a strange, nervous atmosphere created by the combined resentment of the conquered and the brimming excitement of the young and ambitious.
Without much effort Connahei put Theric in his place. He's been spending the last three moon cycles at the mountains, with his small retinue of the Legends, leaving Briaran in charge down in the South. Time has passed and the young whelps have been born, and the Alpha of all Alphas has seen his list of offspring grow again. Not all packs, however, have fared as well. The Eastern pack, under Nalvarrak, has seen little cohesion and is more a collection of lone wolves than a true pack. He was at risk of being displaced by a stronger, more ambitious wolf who comes from distant lands to court power, but ultimately it was his own pack members that led to the destruction of the young pack. Malaq and Soto, two of Nalvarrak's first followers, grew ambitious and plotted to overthrow their alpha and take control. Between them they wounded and drove off their previous leader, and then turned on each other. Malaq easily overpowered Soto when she tried to betray him with a swift bite to the back of the neck, but died of infected wounds when the other pack members abandoned him. Now the east lies open again, waiting for someone to petition the Wolflord for possession of the prime tract of hunting territory.
